Two queer encyclopedias provide a valuable reference for readers

by Anthony Glassman

Conventional wisdom dictates that the arts, both visual and performing, are filled with gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people.

The problem with conventional wisdom is that it is often difficult to prove or disprove. Until now, that is.

Cleis Press' new pair of encyclopedias back up the conventional wisdom with cold, hard facts. The Queer Encyclopedia of the

freely admits that the books are not comprehensive, and that there is a distinct Western bias.

He sees the books as the most comprehensive currently available, as a starting point, a challenge to future encyclopedists.

Given the differing constructions of sexual identity and sexual orientation in Africa and Asia, the contributors do a fairly decent job of covering their bases.

For instance, there are informative listings both for Kabuki, which has now been an allmale theatrical form for almost 400 years and provided an outlet for the same-sex love of Japanese men for centuries, and the newer Takarazuka, a similar mode of theater in which women play all the roles, which has spawned a subversive, dissident fan base in addition to its widespread, mass-market appeal.

There are also listings for contemporary queer African artists, and an extensive article covering the various forms of homosexuality and homoeroticism is traditional African art, further illustrating the series' commitment to taking a global view.

In midto late-2005, a third volume, The Queer Encyclopedia of Film, Theater, and Popular Culture, will be released, a welcome addition to the collection.
